Sustainable Footwear

At Simply Feet, we care about good quality, comfortable and foot-health friendly footwear, that also minimises the imapct on the environment.  We only work with brands that use high quality techniques to manufacture their footwear and strive for upmost quality and sustainability.  There are various things that can be done including using recycled materials and less resource intensive production.

Recycled P.E.T. Bottles

THE CIRCUIT OF A P.E.T. BOTTLE

From the P.E.T. bottle to the inner lining

Every minute, a truckload of plastic ends up in the sea.  Plastic can be recycled into various parts of a shoe including lining, insoles, upper materials and aglets at the end of a lace.

For this purpose, collected P.E.T. bottles are sorted, separated from the lid and label and cleaned. The cleaned bottles are processed into granules, which are melted down and pressed into textile fibers.

Step 1

The P.E.T. bottles are collected and pressed into bales.
In this way, one truck can transport 400,000 bottles.

Step 2

The P.E.T. bottles are sorted by color and the lids and labels are removed. These are also recycled.

Step 3

The next step is to clean and dry the false ones. They are then melted and processed into granules.

Step 4

The granules are used for components of certain shoes.  For this purpose, the granules are melted down and pressed through dies into thread and textile fiber.

The majority of our Jana range incorporates P.E.T recycled materials, as well as being great looking and comfortable, they are good for the environment.

Recycled Rubber

A lot of footwear outsole is made from Rubber which is both durable and with the correcty tread incredibly grippy.

Rubber is a natural material and is harvested mainly in the form of the latex from the rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) or others.  The latex is a sticky, milky and white colloid drawn off by making incisions in the bark and collecting the fluid in vessels in a process called "tapping".  The latex then is refined into the rubber that is ready for commercial processing.

This process can be energy intensive and often means used rubber can end up in landfill.  That is why where we can we find footwear that has got a mixture of new and recucled rubber.  This is often denoted by fleckes of different colours in the rubber compound.

Organic Cotton

Where you see organic cotton, this involves the process of growing and weaving cotton is organic from seed to stitch. organic and gots certified cotton eliminates harmful chemicals, uses up to 91% less water, and 46 % less co2 than conventionally grown.

  • this is much better for the environment, protects soil health, promotes biodiversity and helps combat climate change.
  • fairtrade farmers are treated well and paid properly, at least a living wage. they also aren’t exposed to toxic chemicals at work because we don’t use them
